MacBook Air and Pro with M1 opens the door to 5G. It can't come soon enough

MacBook Air and Pro with M1 opens the door to 5G. It can't come soon enough

Apple on Tuesday spent 45 minutes breathlessly describing the benefits of the custom-designed chip, the M1, powering its newest Macs. Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, talked up the power-saving benefits, which allow for the longest battery life ever for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. He also talked up how quickly the computers would boot up and run programs, such as on the Mac Mini

Yet it's what Apple spent no time on that could hold the most promise for this new line of Apple silicon-based Macs: 5G.

Cellular-connected laptops have been around for years, but they've largely been a niche category serving corporate road warriors. Then along came the coronavirus, which has changed, like so many other things, the way we've seen connectivity and how we all work. Pair that with a 5G network that's starting to mature, promising higher speeds and better coverage in the coming years, and the idea of a constantly connected MacBook Air or Pro sounds attractive.

"Given that remote work is going to be a permanent fixture in enterprise in one way, shape or form, 5G notebooks could become an enterprise mainstay," IDC analyst Linn Huang said.

Because Apple's chips are based on the Arm architecture of mobile processors that power all smartphones and tablets, they're already extremely comfortable with cellular radios. Specifically, these types of processors know how to balance the power management issues that come with a persistent cellular connection, so adding these radios is a snap.

So why no 5G MacBook yet?

This marks the first generation of Macs running on Apple silicon, and the company likely didn't want to take a flyer on relatively new technology since it had so many other fundamentals to take care of, like processor speed, app compatibility and power management. The hardware and feature set are identical to previous Macs, so Apple wasn't taking any chances.

An Apple spokesman wasn't immediately available for comment.

Adding 5G -- a feature that customers aren't clamoring for yet -- makes little sense at this point.

"Apple's stellar Mac results last quarter certainly suggest that the lack of cellular connectivity is not holding Apple back," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Techsponential.

The company's sales of Macs accounted for 7.7% of the total market for PCs, a notch up from a year ago, according to Gartner.

Apple also just finished unveiling its family of iPhone 12 handsets, where 5G plays a marquee role. The company was more than a year and a half behind the competition when it came to putting out a 5G phone, so it likely isn't in a rush to add it into yet another category of devices.

With 5G networks still in their nascent stage -- nationwide coverage is disappointingly slow and the super-high speeds are only found in small pockets of major population centers -- the immediate tangible benefits of connectivity are still pretty limited.

But analysts believe 5G will play an increasingly important role in laptops at some point -- think one or two generations from now. Carriers will be keen to offer yet another product they can connect to their networks. And while you may loathe the idea of yet another addition to your wireless bill, it could be an option for your employer outfitting you with a connected laptop.

The idea of opening up your laptop virtually anywhere and getting a connection without searching for a Wi-Fi hotspot, after all, is pretty appealing.

While Apple uses Qualcomm modems for its iPhones, the company has been quietly working on its own modems. The company, after all, spent $1 billion to acquire Intel's cellular radio business and talent.

Your IT manager probably likes the idea too. A 5G connection is more secure than a public Wi-Fi network. Paying for 5G service on a Mac is a lot cleaner than trying to figure out how much a company should chip in for your home broadband connection, Huang noted. With the coronavirus lockdown forcing companies to rethink how and where their employees work and as being remote becomes an enduring norm, 5G could offer your corporate IT a lifeline.

Apple's event to show off the new Macs is its third big product unveiling in as many months. Going that route, rather than announcing them in a press release or quiet briefing with the media, shows the company thinks these Macs, and where it wants to drive their evolution using Apple silicon, are a big deal.

There's a strong likelihood that evolution will take a path that finds its way to 5G in the coming years.

Microsoft says Android apps won't be available for Windows 11 on Oct. 5 launch

Microsoft's delaying one of the most highly anticipated features of its new Windows 11 software. The tech giant said it won't offer Android mobile phone apps on its new app store for PCs when its next iteration of Windows launches on Oct. 5 as a free upgrade for many users. Microsoft didn't give a date for when Android apps will be made available either.

Instead, the software said it plans to offer the new feature, developed in partnership with Intel and Amazon, available in a "preview" test "over the coming months."

"We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11," Microsoft said in its short statement on the matter Tuesday.

The move marks the first major setback for Microsoft's upcoming Windows 11 software, which is launching six years after Windows 10 hit store shelves. The new Android app support feature was an important selling point, alongside new visual looks, better organizational tools and improved gaming performance.

Microsoft announced its Android app support in June, saying people will be able to find search for and install Android apps from its Microsoft Store on Windows 11. The apps would be offered through a partnership with Amazon. Before Microsoft made its plans public, there had been a couple of ways to access Android apps on Windows 10, including if you had a Samsung Galaxy phone. But Microsoft's new way promises to make it easier.

"It's just seamless and smooth," Microsoft's Chief Product Officer Panos Panay said when announcing the new feature.

§

Windows 11  started its wide rollout on Oct. 5 -- the first major upgrade in six years. Windows 11 is available as a free download for existing Windows 10 users, but it's not yet available for every compatible Windows device. And every major new feature promised isn't available right now. (Microsoft announced this in an August blog post).

We've already tested and published a full review of Windows 11 (it's familiar but fresh, with a Mac-like design). You can expect a few new multitasking features, and the Start menu is in a new place. However, it will not include one of the most anticipated updates: support for Android mobile apps in its new app store. Microsoft also didn't offer a date for when Android apps would be available either, other than saying that it would roll out in a "preview" test "over the coming months," according to the post.

There's a lot to look forward to. But even if your device hasn't been prompted to update, you can still check to see if you meet the compatibility requirements. Heads up, (you'll need to be running Windows 10 first to do so -- here's how to download Windows 10 for free if you haven't yet). And just because you have a compatible Windows device doesn't mean you'll be able to run Windows 11 starting today.

Microsoft said the launch will be "phased and measured," with new eligible devices getting the upgrade first and the rest getting offered the free upgrade sometime between October and mid-2022, depending on your hardware, age of device and other factors. You'll get a notification from Windows Update letting you know when Windows 11 is available to you, or you can check manually (here's more on how to download Windows 11 before your system asks you to).

While you wait for Microsoft's new operating system to arrive, you can check to see if your computer will be able to automatically update to Windows 11 (you'll need to be running Windows 10 first to do so -- here's how to download Windows 10 for free if you haven't yet). But even if it isn't deemed compatible, there will be a way to manually download a version that is not supported by Microsoft. And here's how to set the default search engine, if you'd rather not use Bing.

You also don't have to upgrade to Windows 11 right away if you don't want to -- Microsoft will still support Windows 10 through October 2025.

Missing IPhone Texts And Notifications Are Frustrating: These Fixes Could Help

Missing iPhone texts and notifications are frustrating: These fixes could help

Missing iPhone texts and notifications are frustrating: These fixes could help

Apple's iOS 15 made a number of changes to how notifications work, allowing iPhone users to prioritize important alerts and make less important notifications less intrusive. They're certainly less intrusive: Over the past few months I've been wrestling with my iPhone's settings to even see when my friends message me on WhatsApp, Signal, Instagram and other apps. In one extreme case, a friend texted me on Signal on a Friday, and I didn't even notice their text until Monday when I opened up the app -- thankfully it was nothing pressing, but I was embarrassed.

I'm not alone in this frustration. Multiple threads on Reddit are focused on trying to bring notifications back, whether due to changes in how notifications behave when Do Not Disturb is on, how notifications won't appear unless you proactively enter an app and people having such a difficult time with iOS 15's Focus feature that they're finding it easier to use apps with similar notification controls.

Third-party app developers might not be able to control these systems either. WhatsApp has an FAQ page that specifically references the way Apple controls push notifications on the iPhone. While the issue appears to originate from WhatsApp, there's little the company can recommend apart from restoring the phone to factory settings and starting over.

These issues have the potential to come to a head during the busy holiday season, since family and friends will use whatever device and messaging service is most convenient to get in touch. Notifications are the way we keep up with chats, whether your friends and family prefer iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or any other number of texting and video chat apps.

So let's go over some of the biggest obstacles that currently affect notifications and applicable solutions where possible.

iOS 15's Focus may need some tweaks

iOS 15's Focus mode is meant to be an evolution of Do Not Disturb. In addition to allowing users to select Do Not Disturb, which lets you silence notifications until it is turned off, it allows you to create situational profiles that are more custom tailored to your needs. For instance, I recently created a "Movies" focus that when enabled turns off notifications from all apps, phone calls and texts except for the RunPee app, which is a timer that sends a notification at the best times to leave a movie theater to take a restroom break.

Focus, while well-intentioned, does however lead to an easy way to accidentally leave your phone in a state of not receiving notifications. Focus can also be enabled to be run across your various Apple devices, making it either convenient for silencing notifications for your needs or a liability if you only wanted to silence your phone but leave your iPad and Mac computers alone.

Accessing Focus for turning it on and off is fairly easy: You open Control Center by either scrolling down from the top-right corner of an iPhone with Face ID's display or scrolling up from the bottom of an iPhone with a home button's display. This should serve as a decent first start for figuring out whether Focus is the issue at fault.

If it appears like the issues are the Focus settings themselves, you'll need to drill down by going to the iPhone's Settings app, scrolling down to Focus and entering the menu for the specific Focus you need to adjust. For instance, I noticed my Sleep focus that begins to activate around 10:50 p.m. was causing me to miss texts and video calls from friends that I do enjoy talking to before bed -- but I didn't want to leave my phone open for anyone to ring that late at night. I adjusted the Sleep focus to allow calls from specific people that I am OK with reaching me after that time. It's not elegant as now that smaller list could potentially decide to wake me up to calls at 3 a.m., but for now it's the best system for me.

The way your notifications are delivered might also have been changed depending on your Focus settings. Instead of receiving notifications individually, your Focus may be collecting them together into a Summary. Tweaks to how that summary works can be found separately by going to Settings, Notifications and tapping Scheduled Summary to make tweaks or to turn the feature off.

Notifications that are hidden might be collected for a summary, depending on your settings.

Patrick Holland/CNET

Do Not Disturb's changes may disturb how you use your phone

Do Not Disturb is now part of Focus, but it has a key tweak that appears to be messing with the way some people have previously used their phone. Before iOS 15, when turning on Do Not Disturb an iPhone wouldn't buzz or immediately display notifications while the phone was locked and the display was off. However, notifications would display if you were actively using the phone while it's in Do Not Disturb mode.

The fix isn't quite clean as of yet. Like with the previous example I gave of adjusting the settings of an individual Focus, you can adjust how the Do Not Disturb Focus behaves. In addition to selecting people you can ring your phone, you can pick specific apps that are allowed to notify you when you have Do Not Disturb on. However, then the apps you choose will notify your phone at all times when Do Not Disturb is enabled, whether your phone display is on or off.

If this bothers you, you aren't alone. A fairly active Reddit thread on r/iOS has been communicating on exactly that issue and sharing tips for workarounds until something official is hopefully baked in at a later date.

A strange solution for getting notifications back

During my own wrangling through various Reddits and Apple support pages to get my notifications working for WhatsApp, Signal and Instagram, I found a strange solution that has at least worked for myself.

In Apple's Support forums, one person discovered that turning on and off the "Announce Notifications" feature could possibly fix your phone's notifications. To access it, you go to Settings, then Notifications, then Siri, then turn Announce Notifications on. The feature is normally for allowing Siri to read your notifications out loud, such as when you are driving. But instead of leaving it on, exit out of the Settings app, then re-enter it and turn it back off.

Somehow when I do those steps, apps that aren't notifying me resume again. It doesn't make sense, but I've now run through these steps twice when I noticed the problem has resumed, and it's fixed it each time.

I'll keep updating this article as I find more solutions for getting notifications back in iOS 15. If you have found any roadblocks that have stopped you from receiving notifications or solutions to getting them back, feel free to write them in the comments.

Microsoft reportedly blocks older PCs from Windows 11 preview

Some Microsoft users participating in the company's program to test Windows 11 are going to have to wait until October to spend more time with the new operating system. On Wednesday, Microsoft booted older PCs with unsupported hardware from the Windows Insider preview of Windows 11, reported PCWorld.

Microsoft reportedly blocked users with older computers due to hardware and security requirements. The Windows Insider program participants received a message in their computer settings that their PC doesn't meet hardware requirements, according to PCWorld. They were reportedly given the option to install Windows 10 to stay in the Insider program.

The announcement comes after Microsoft's blog post last week detailing Windows 11 requirements and the re-release of the PC Health Check app. If you have an older Insider PC, you'll still be able to download Windows 11 when it's released to the general public. However, you won't be entitled to security and software updates. According to Microsoft's announcement, older PCs are 52% more likely to crash, but newer computers reportedly have a 99.8% "crash-free experience."

But if your computer meets the Windows 11 requirements and you're still getting the message that your computer doesn't meet those requirements, it could be for two other reasons. Microsoft noted that TPM 2.0, a security and encryption processor, may not be enabled or supported on your computer. Or it could be that your computer's processor isn't supported. If neither works, your computer may not be compatible after all.

Windows 11 is scheduled to be released on Oct. 5. Microsoft will support Windows 10 until Oct. 14, 2025.

Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Snapchat creates lens to help you reconnect with friends amid COVID-19

Snapchat on Wednesday rolled out a tool to help friends reconnect via augmented reality amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Friendship Time Capsule uses machine learning to let users "get a glimpse of their friendship in a variety of scenarios in the future," the company said in a statement.

To use the tool, open up the Friendship Time Capsule, snap a selfie, choose a year and then send the pic to a friend. The feature will put both people into different scenarios together, such as visiting the moon, from now up until 2120. Snap's machine learning tech will also age friends according to what year they're virtually traveling to.

Snap says it created this tool to "combat some of the difficulties friendships are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic." The company's recent Friendship Report found that the pandemic has affected more than a third of friendships around the world in some way. More than half of the people impacted say they don't feel as close to their friends anymore.

Going on vacation together is the one event that's most likely to strengthen a friendship, Snap found. But since that's hard to do right now, the company says, it wanted to find a way to imitate this in AR, "allowing Snapchatters to share positive thoughts with their friends about where they will go together in the future."

Broken IPod Touch: Repair Or Replace?

How to repair ipod ipod touch repair cost repair broken ipod touch screen how to repair an ipod touch repairs for ipod touch broken ipod touch cost to repair broken ipod touch 5 screen
Broken iPod Touch: Repair or replace?

Broken iPod Touch: Repair or replace?

Ouch.

Is there a worse feeling than seeing your iPod Touch smack the ground and hearing the unmistakable crack of glass?

Just one: picking up the iPod and realizing the screen is shattered top-to-bottom. That was one expensive attack of gravity.

This happened to my daughter not long ago, resulting in a fourth-gen iPod Touch that, remarkably, still worked, but really wasn't usable anymore owing to the spider web of cracked glass.

As the household cheapskate, I figured it would be cheaper to repair the unit than buy a new one. After all, a current 32GB iPod Touch sells new for $299 and refurbished one for $249.

Sure enough, a quick check of eBay revealed "4th-gen iPod Touch glass digitizer touchscreens" for as little as $12 -- repair tools included. Sold!

Heh, heh, too bad for the suckers paying $70, $80, even $100 to have their iPods fixed by professionals. I can operate a screwdriver; how hard could the job be?

Before I could find out, I discovered that I'd wasted $12. Although only the Touch's glass was broken, the 4th-gen model is designed in such a way that it's permanently adhered to the LCD beneath it. Even though the latter was still functioning, some online research revealed that it's close to impossible to replace just the glass. Crud.

(As I understand it, and as detailed in Donald Bell's story on fixing a cracked iPod Touch screen, earlier-generation models weren't like this. You could replace just the glass.)

So then I went shopping for a replacement "LCD screen digitizer assembly" (i.e. the whole kit and kaboodle) -- and found one (again on Ebay) for around $26 shipped. Still a bargain compared with hiring a pro and paying a huge markup for the parts.

When that kit arrived, I watched a couple YouTube videos demonstrating the screen-replacement process. They made it look fairly easy, but it's not -- especially if the screen is really busted up, which mine was. I ended up removing a lot of individual shards of glass before finally getting the main assembly pried loose.

From there I discovered that a lighted, freestanding magnifying glass is a must. The iPod Touch, a miracle of modern engineering, is packed with tiny components, including screws that are downright molecular.

It took me nearly 2 hours of careful, painstaking work to disassemble the unit, connect the new screen, and put it together again -- only to discover that something didn't work right. The screen lit up, but with only a blank white image.

Was it defective? Had I shorted something out? Torn one of the paper-thin ribbon cables? There was no way to know. All I had to show for my work was a lot of frustration and a disappointed daughter.

Moral of the story: Unless you're really adept with tiny electronics, it probably makes sense to pay a pro to handle the repair. That said, I found a couple shops in my area that were willing to do the labor for $20-30 if I supplied the part. Given what I paid on Ebay for the replacement LCD, that would get me out the door for around $55 -- maybe less.

Of course, even if you pay a service like DigiExpress or Rapid Repair upwards of $100 for the parts and service, it's still quite a bit less than the price of a new iPod.

Have you ever attempted an iPod or iPhone screen repair on your own? If so, how did it go?

7 Stress-Relief Strategies That Really Work

7 Stress-Relief Strategies That Really Work

Stressors abound these days -- from the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, to economic strife, to the rise in monkeypox cases in addition to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

Both your mind and body can experience the effects of stress -- you might feel irritable and frustrated, or, if the stress is chronic, you might experience symptoms like frequent headaches, libido changes, digestive troubles, depression, decreased energy and sleeping trouble.

Although it's not always possible to control stressors, there are steps you can take to maintain your well-being in the midst of difficult situations. These tips can help you effectively relieve stress daily.

Why do I feel stress?

Stress is natural; it's your body's physical, mental or emotional response to external situations. It's different for everyone. What stresses you out might not phase your friends.

In stressful situations, our bodies respond by activating the sympathetic nervous system, the part of the autonomic nervous system known as the fight-or-flight response. Your heart starts to beat faster, and you start to sweat and tense up. It's a chemical process that prepares your body to physically react to being under attack.

Even when you're not in physical danger, your body still reacts the same way to things that are overwhelming you. You're more susceptible to stressful situations when you're not getting enough sleep, not eating well and don't have a solid support system.

How to relieve stress

Remember that your way of dealing with stress may be different from others, and that's okay. Ultimately, reducing stress is a personalized approach. Many of the tips are pretty general; this allows you to find your middle ground and decide what works for you. Use these tips to get started on your journey to getting rid of stress. The best part is that they're free and you can do them anywhere.

1. Exercise to boost your mood

Exercise can act as an intervention for anxiety and depression. A study of university students found that two days of aerobic exercise greatly reduced perceived stress and improved self-reported depression. Long periods of inactivity are associated with greater levels of mood disturbances and higher stress. Exercise can benefit your mood and help you "break the cycle" of stress.

The World Health Organization recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. You don't need a gym membership or special at-home machines; it's achievable at home and easier than you think. If you feel stress symptoms creeping up, try going for a walk. A 20-minute walk outside will decrease your stress hormone levels.

2. Incorporate self-care into your routine

What is self-care? Think of it as refilling yourself in healthy ways by doing things that promote emotional and physical well-being. It's easy to get into a negative space when you are stressed or burnt out. Integrating self-care into your daily routine will help you stay positive and acknowledge that some things are out of your control without feeling overwhelmed. A 2018 study conducted on medical students concluded that those who practice self-care regularly report lower levels of stress and high quality of life ratings.

Another part of self-care is focusing on positive self-talk. During times of stress, it's easy to let negative thoughts take over. Positive self-talk isn't ignoring the bad things; it means you approach the situation with a positive attitude. Research shows that positive self-talk is associated with lower levels of depression, stress and greater life satisfaction.

Self-care and positive self-talk should be a part of your daily routine. It's not something you have to save until you are running on empty.

3. Practice mindfulness or yoga

When you're stressed, your sympathetic nervous system triggers your fight-or-flight response. Your parasympathetic nervous system is the counterpart that returns your body to a balanced state. Breathing exercises during stressful situations activate the parasympathetic nervous system and help you relax.

A meta-analysis of over 200 studies concluded that mindfulness-based therapy reduces depression, anxiety and stress. Daily meditation is another powerful tool for increasing attention and mood, even in short bursts.

Yoga is one of the most popular tactics for getting rid of stress. Studies have found that yoga helps reduce stress and anxiety while increasing overall well-being.

4. Drink less caffeine

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks worldwide, with the average American drinker having just over three cups a day. Short-term benefits associated with caffeine include increased alertness, attention and concentration. This happens because caffeine activates your fight-or-flight response.

Additionally, caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, which facilitates sleep in the body. The adenosinergic system is involved with both the origin and the treatment of mood and anxiety. This suggests caffeine can exacerbate symptoms in people with an increased risk of anxiety disorders.

Everyone has a different tolerance for caffeine, so you can be healthy and drink coffee. Finding your ideal balance is as easy as making a note of how you feel after each additional cup. If you start feeling jittery or nervous, you can replace that extra cup with water or tea in the future.

5. Don't sacrifice sleep

If you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, your sleep can suffer. It can become a vicious cycle of being stressed and tired and then unable to turn your brain "off" enough to go to sleep. The more sleep you get, however, the more your perceived stress level goes down.

So how do you get quality sleep when you're tired? It all comes down to getting your body ready for bed. The adrenaline and cortisol in your body keep you from going from an overwhelming state to sleep. To combat this, you can try to implement relaxing activities into your nightly routine. Not only does your body start to expect to go to sleep after your routine, but it also helps you relax enough to fall asleep. A nightly routine will look different for everyone -- common activities include reading a book, taking a bath, listening to music or yoga.

6. Make meaningful connections

A support system of friends and family can help reduce stress, especially during transitional life stages like college. However, if your family is the source of your stress, it's also important to set boundaries for yourself and others. Boundaries are an essential way to protect your mental health and can keep you from taking too much on. The boundaries you create are completely up to you -- it can be as simple as "please call first before you stop by." Studies have found that the better you are at establishing boundaries in both your personal and work life, the bigger buffer you have for stress.

Pets are another source of stress reduction. Hugging your pet signals to your body to release oxytocin, which is one of the feel-good hormones. People with pets tend to have lower levels of loneliness and anxiety. So if you're feeling particularly overwhelmed, take a minute and go hug your pet. Science backs the benefits.

7. Set realistic goals

Reaching for the stars is great, but so is setting realistic goals for yourself -- whatever they may be. It's important to be aware of what you can control and how that impacts what you want to achieve. It's normal to want to reach the goals and expectations we set for ourselves. Putting them outside of your reach -- even optimistically -- has the chance to backfire and leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Unrealistic goals can be a source of stress that leaves you feeling down when you don't reach them.

Too long; didn't read?

Feeling stressed is a natural response our body has. It's completely normal to have waves where you are more or less overwhelmed. Since we can't change everything and completely get rid of stress, learning to manage it in a healthy way is essential. Identify your stress triggers and use these simple tips to manage those negative feelings.

With its new QD-OLED TV, Samsung may soon overtake LG for best picture quality

This story is part of CES, where CNET covers the latest news on the most incredible tech coming soon.

Get ready for a new OLED TV player. Samsung is the top-selling TV brand worldwide, but its QLED televisions have never performed as well as OLED TVs made by rivals like LG. At CES 2022, Samsung tackled those rivals head on with its new QD Display, a new kind of big screen that relies on OLED technology.

The TV wasn't announced in an official press release like Samsung's other 2022 models. Instead, it appeared as a 2022 Best of Innovation award winner at CES.

"Samsung's 65-inch QD-Display TV is the world's first true RGB self-emitting Quantum Dot OLED display ... combining the contrast levels of RGB OLED with the color and brightness of quantum dots," the award's text reads. Other features mentioned include four HDMI 2.1 inputs, a 144Hz refresh rate, a "Neo Quantum Processor" and immersive sound.

Other details about the TV, including pricing, availability, images or screen sizes beyond 65 inches, are currently unclear. CNET reached out to Samsung for additional details and a representative replied, "All I can say at this time is that we'll have more to share about the 2022 TV lineup in the next several weeks." They added that the TV's name has yet to be determined.

A new kind of OLED TVs could have big implications for the high-end TV market. A company called LG Display currently manufactures all the OLED TVs available today, and supplies them not only to LG Electronics but also to Sony, Vizio, Philips, Panasonic and others worldwide.

QD-Display panels, first announced in 2019, are manufactured by Samsung Display and could be sold to not only Samsung but other brands, too. In fact Sony will sell its own QD-OLED TV later in 2022, and other brands could follow. More manufacturers of OLED TVs could mean increased competition and lower prices overall.

OLED is the gold standard among high-end TVs  with perfect black levels, no stray illumination and excellent off-angle viewing. QD-OLED combines organic light-emitting diodes and quantum dots. With the current version of OLED, yellow and blue OLED materials create "white" light and filters mix in other colors. QD-OLED uses blue OLEDs to create light and quantum dots to convert some of the blue into red and green.

The benefits, according to Samsung Display, include better color overall, improved viewing angles and the same perfect black levels that conventional OLED is known for.

Red and green quantum dots

Two bottles of quantum dots in a liquid solution emit red and green light when illuminated with blue light. The technology powers Samsung's QD OLED TVs.

Current OLED TV panels manufactured by LG Display come in a variety of sizes and sale prices on OLED TVs have fallen below $1,000 for the smallest, least-expensive examples. I don't expect Samsung's QD-OLED TVs to offer as much variety or get as affordable, especially in their first year, and I'd be surprised if the picture quality improvement, if any, blows me away. There's also the question of how the next technology will hold up over time or handle potential burn-in

That said, the mere presence of another kind of OLED TV -- and the competition it brings -- is good news for people who care about picture quality.

Samsung made numerous other TV announcements in advance of CES 2022, including its latest Neo QLED, MicroLED and The Frame models, a gaming hub with access to cloud services and a remote that harvests RF waves to recharge.

Save Money on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and More With This Clever Trick

House of the Dragon, She-Hulk, and the upcoming season of Cobra Kai will keep our TV screens occupied. There are lots of great shows and movies across dozens of streaming services, but even subscribing to five of them could cost you more than $50 a month. (Just look at the latest pricing news for Disney Plus.) We're going to show you a trick that can help save you money.

Think about this: You subscribe to one or more services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus or HBO Max, stream until your favorite series ends its season run, then look for the next thing to watch. But is it worth keeping multiple subscriptions active if you're not actively watching anything on them? I don't think so.

Here's a breakdown on our money-saving strategy and some tips on how to become a master at it.

Rotate your streaming services

CNET Tech Tips logo

For cord-cutters, leaving pricey cable packages behind in favor of streaming is a win for the wallet. Because we're able to sign up for monthly plans, it's easy to jump into a streaming service and jump out when prices increase or content dries up. According to Deloitte's 2022 Media Trends report, the biggest reasons people cancel their streaming subscriptions are because of pricing and lack of fresh content. Media companies call this behavior "churn." We're calling this the rotation method.

The benefits? You save cash and avoid content droughts. Let's say a hot title like House of the Dragon or The Real Housewives is set to premiere on a service. Note the total episode count and wait until they're all available at once on a platform. You cancel HBO Max, Disney Plus or other service and then, once the episodes are available, resubscribe to catch up on your faves. Alternately, you can start streaming a show midseason to cut costs. My monthly guide on which streaming services to cancel can help you keep up.

The downside? You won't have immediate access to every show you want to watch and will have to wait until the full season airs. And since many streaming services release new episodes weekly, rather than all at once, you might not be caught up at the same time as your friends. If you're someone who prefers to watch episodes immediately when they drop, you may decide it's worth it to have multiple subscriptions at a time. If you have patience, however, you can save some money.

The strategy can also work if you have a live TV streaming service to keep up with a particular sport. Once the season wraps up, cancel the service and save big, or move to a cheaper platform with fewer channels like Sling TV.

Would you want to pay for four months of Disney Plus to watch Andor when you can catch all 12 episodes in November for the price of one month?

Tip No. 1: Cancel your streaming subscription before getting charged

Set calendar reminders for your billing cycle and upcoming TV show or movie release dates. Give yourself enough warning to begin or end a subscription. Apps such as JustWatch, TV Time and Hobi help you track when and where TV shows and movies appear on a streaming service.

Tip No. 2: Snag a streaming service deal

Look for discounts on streaming services. For example, Starz is offering a special rate of $5 per month for three months, which cuts its regular monthly rate of $9 nearly in half. You can also take advantage of the Disney Bundle, which provides access to Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Plus in one package for a reduced price. And eligible Hulu subscribers can add on Disney Plus for $3. Lastly, be sure to check with your mobile carrier to see which ones offer free streaming subscriptions.

Tip No. 3: Pick one or two default streamers

Subscribe to one or two must-have services for the year, and select only one or two more options to fit your monthly budget. Rotate the bonus service(s) according to what you want to watch, ensuring you don't miss your favorite shows while sticking to your monthly spending cap.

Tip No. 4: Stick to monthly billing

Avoid annual subscriptions and pay attention to your auto-renewal payment dates. Your billing cycle can help determine when it's the best time to quit a service, even if you've only signed up for a free trial.

Tip No. 5: Don't cancel your streaming service, pause it

Hulu allows you to pause your subscription for up to 12 weeks, and Sling has a similar option with stipulations. Check with your streaming provider to see if you can take a temporary break without canceling.

Give it a shot, and if you don't like it you can always resubscribe. For more excellent tips on streaming TV, check out this guide to Netflix's hidden tricks and our recommendations for the best internet services.
